Hair Brush OEM & ODM Services — Factory-Direct Custom Manufacturing Since 2014
Mackay is a vertically integrated hair brush OEM and ODM factory in Guangzhou, China — not a trading company, not a sourcing agent. Every brush we produce is engineered, molded, tufted, assembled, and inspected inside our own ISO9001-certified facility. For over a decade, we have been the OEM and ODM manufacturing partner behind 800+ private label hair brush brands across 90+ countries.
Real Factory vs Trading Company — Why It Matters for Your OEM Project
A large share of the “hair brush manufacturers” listed on alibaba.com and similar B2B platforms are trading companies that subcontract production to workshops they do not control. Here is what changes when you work directly with the factory.
| Capability | Trading Company | Real Factory (Mackay) |
|---|---|---|
| Mold Ownership | ✕ Borrowed from random workshops | ✓ 1,500+ proprietary molds, on-site library |
| Mold Workshop | ✕ None | ✓ In-house CNC mold cutting |
| Engineering Team | ✕ Sales reps only | ✓ On-staff product engineers |
| Quality Control | ✕ Outsourced or none | ✓ 5-stage in-house inspection |
| Pricing Structure | ✕ +30-40% middleman markup | ✓ Factory-direct, no markup layers |
| Lead Time Control | ✕ Dependent on subcontractors | ✓ Direct production schedule control |
| Custom Modifications | ✕ Limited to “existing options” | ✓ Any spec, with engineering support |
| NDA Enforcement | ✕ Often unenforceable | ✓ Legal protection with named entity |
Six Capabilities That Define a Real Hair Brush OEM Factory
A real hair brush OEM and ODM manufacturer controls these six functions in-house. Anything less is sourcing or trading — not manufacturing.
In-House Mold Workshop
3D CAD design plus CNC mold cutting on-site. Our high-precision CNC machines operate with a tooling tolerance of ±0.02mm. This guarantees seamless handle parting lines and prevents the hair-snagging defects common in outsourced molds. Average new mold lead time is 25 days.
Injection Molding & Capacity
Automated injection molding lines delivering a monthly capacity of 500,000+ pieces, scaling with product complexity. We maintain direct sourcing contracts for premium PA66 nylon, ABS, and PCR plastics, insulating your supply chain from global material shortages.
Bristle Engineering
8 bristle configurations: PA66 nylon (220°C heat-resistant), PA46 premium nylon (285°C), natural boar, mixed boar-nylon, double-dip epoxy ball-tipped nylon, wooden pins, TPE soft-touch, metal pins. Automated CNC tufting for consistency. Learn more in our bristle materials guide.
Assembly & Finishing
Pantone color matching with no minimum color quantity. Logo application via pad printing, laser engraving, heat transfer, or 3D water transfer. Premium options include rubber-grip ergonomic coating and metallic accents.
5-Stage Quality Control
Injection check, bristle planting verification, assembly test, finish inspection, final packaging audit — every batch, every order. QC photos and reports provided at each stage. Third-party audits welcome. Full detail on our five-stage quality control process — what is checked at each stage, how tuft retention is tested, and who has authority to stop a run.
Compliance & Documentation
ISO9001, BSCI, CE, RoHS, GCC, FSC, SGS and PSE — with verifiable certificate numbers. Support for CPSIA, REACH, California Prop 65, and Amazon FBA packaging compliance.
From Concept to Patent — Our OEM R&D Pipeline
Most “custom hair brush manufacturers” copy designs from Alibaba listings. We design, prototype, and patent our own work — and we can do the same for your brand. Every custom OEM product follows this exact 4-stage development pipeline.
Manuscript
Hand-drawn concept sketches translating your brand vision into product geometry.
→
Computer Drawing
3D CAD modeling with ±0.02mm tolerance specifications for CNC mold cutting.
→
Finished Product
Pre-production sample manufactured for client approval before mass production.
→
Patent Certificate
Original designs filed for utility model or appearance patents to protect your IP.
Why this matters for your brand: When you commission a custom OEM brush with Mackay, the design enters our R&D pipeline as a protected asset. We hold multiple utility and appearance patents on our original designs — and we can file patent applications on your custom designs under your brand entity to lock down your competitive position before market launch. This is the difference between a real factory partner and a sourcing agent who copies your design and sells it to your competitor 6 months later.
OEM vs ODM — Choose Your Manufacturing Path
Both routes deliver a custom hair brush from our factory. The difference is who designs it, who owns the mold, and how much you invest upfront.
Full OEM
Original Equipment Manufacturer — You design, we manufacture- Design Input: Your 3D files / engineering drawings
- Mold Investment: $3,000 – $8,500
- Mold Ownership: Yours — IP locked, exclusive production
- MOQ: 3,000 pieces per style
- Time to Market: 12-16 weeks (incl. mold tooling)
- Best For: Established brands with unique IP
Full OEM is the right choice when your product needs to be unmistakably different from anything else on the market — and you have validated demand to justify the tooling investment.
ODM
Original Design Manufacturer — We modify, you brand- Design Input: Concept / reference products
- Mold Investment: $0 (using existing molds)
- Mold Ownership: Ours, but your design combo NDA-protected
- MOQ: 500 pieces per style
- Time to Market: 8-10 weeks
- Best For: Growing brands wanting differentiation
ODM is the path most brands actually take. We start from one of our 1,500+ existing molds and modify it — different bristle configuration, custom Pantone, exclusive packaging — to create a product that is uniquely yours without the upfront mold investment.
Mackay’s IP Protection Protocol
When you invest in a custom OEM mold with Mackay, your design assets enter our IP protection workflow. 3D CAD files are stored on access-restricted servers under client-specific permissions. Physical mold blocks are tagged with a unique client identifier and stored in our secured tooling library. For OEM clients who commission proprietary molds, we contractually commit to exclusive production of that specific mold for your brand — with mold exclusivity terms documented in your manufacturing agreement.
Most brands start with ODM to test the market with $500 in tooling, then upgrade to full OEM for their bestselling SKUs once sales data justifies the $3,000-$8,500 mold investment. We support both paths in-house — you do not need to switch factories as your brand scales. For brands that want our existing designs with custom branding only, see our private label service (MOQ 300, fastest at 6-8 weeks).

What to Send Us: The OEM Development Brief
Most first quotations are slow for one reason — the brief is incomplete, and we spend three days asking questions instead of pricing. Below is exactly what our engineering team needs, why each field matters, and what to do if you do not have that answer yet.
Part 1 — The Product
| What to send | Why we need it | If you do not have it yet |
|---|---|---|
| Model number, reference images, or photos of a physical sample | This is the fastest route to an accurate quote. If it resembles something in our 1,500+ mold library, we can price it the same day and you may avoid tooling cost entirely. | Send competitor products you want to differentiate from, or a rough sketch. We will come back with the closest base molds we hold. |
| Dimensions and materials | Barrel diameter, overall length, and handle material determine which molds apply and what the unit cost floor is. | Tell us the hair type and use case instead. Barrel sizing follows hair length, and we can recommend from there. |
| Colour, with Pantone codes | Pantone matching has no minimum colour quantity here, but each additional colour affects both the injection setup and the packaging print cost. | Send your brand guidelines or a physical colour reference. We will match and send a colour chip for approval. |
| Bristle type and density | Nylon, natural boar, or mixed — and how densely planted. This is the single biggest driver of how the brush performs, and it is decided at the tufting stage, not afterwards. | Describe the result you want (shine, detangling, volume, extension-safe) and the target hair type. We will specify the configuration. |
| Logo method and position | Pad print, hot stamp, laser engraving, 3D water transfer, or electroplating. Each has different tooling, different durability, and different suitability by handle material. | Send the logo file in vector format and tell us where you want it. We will advise which method survives daily use on that surface. |
| Special functional requirements | Anti-static, high heat resistance, wet-use safety, extension-safe bristles. These change the material specification, not just the finish. | Tell us the market and channel. Requirements often come from the retailer rather than the brand. |
Part 2 — Packaging
| What to send | Why we need it | If you do not have it yet |
|---|---|---|
| Packaging format | Poly bag, printed retail box, gift box, or blister. This decides tooling, print run minimums, and a meaningful share of your landed cost. | Tell us the retail channel and target shelf price. Packaging format follows from where the product is sold. |
| Inserts: instruction sheet, compliance card, barcode | Some marketplaces and retail channels require documents in the box. Adding them after artwork is approved means re-running the print. | Tell us which markets and platforms you sell on. We will flag what those channels expect. |
| Units per carton and master carton requirements | Carton configuration affects freight cost, warehouse handling, and whether the shipment is FBA-ready on arrival. | Tell us the destination and whether it ships to a warehouse, a 3PL, or direct to FBA. We will propose the configuration. |
Part 3 — Commercial Terms
| What to send | Why we need it | If you do not have it yet |
|---|---|---|
| Final quantity, broken down by colour and model | Pricing is per style. A 3,000-piece order across three colours prices differently from 3,000 pieces of one colour, because each colour is a separate setup. | Give us a range. We will quote at two or three volume points so you can see where the breaks fall. |
| Target unit price and Incoterm (EXW or FOB) | A target price tells us which specification to aim for. Without it we quote our default build, which may be above or below what you need. | Tell us your target retail price and margin. We will work backwards to a landed cost. |
| Sample approval method | Whether you want an approval sample before tooling commitment, a pre-production sample from the actual production setup, or both. This decides the timeline and who carries the risk if bulk differs from sample. | If unsure, we default to a pre-production sample signed off in writing before mass production begins. |
| Delivery deadline | A hard date (a trade show, a retail reset, a marketing launch) changes how we schedule the line and whether the timeline is achievable at all. | Tell us if the date is fixed or flexible. We will tell you honestly whether it is achievable before you commit. |
| Payment terms | Terms are agreed before production is scheduled, not after. | Ask. We will send our standard terms and discuss what works for a first order. |
The short version, if you are sending an email today

Packaging: format · inserts needed · units per carton.
Commercial: quantity by colour · target price and Incoterm · sample approval method · deadline · payment terms.
Anything you cannot answer, write “need advice” next to it. A brief with six answered fields and three questions is far more useful to us than a brief that waits three weeks to be complete.
Once we have this, you receive a technical feasibility assessment, the closest matching base molds, and a preliminary price range within 24 business hours. If something in the brief is not manufacturable as described — or is manufacturable but will cost far more than it needs to — we will say so at that stage rather than at the sampling stage.

“Engineer’s Note: The single biggest mistake new brand owners make when choosing a hair brush OEM partner is treating it as a commodity transaction. A real factory partnership compounds over time — the same engineer who designs your first SKU knows your tolerance preferences, your packaging specs, your retail target market. By year three, that institutional knowledge alone is worth more than the unit cost savings of switching factories. The brands that grow fastest in our portfolio are the ones who treat us as their engineering team, not their supplier.”
