Private Label vs ODM vs OEM
We offer all three manufacturing models. Find the right path for your budget.
| Feature | Private Label (White Label) | ODM (Modified Design) | OEM (Full Custom Design) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Definition | Use our existing 1,500+ molds, add your logo and colors. | Use existing molds but modify bristles, cushion, or handle finish. | Design a completely new brush from scratch. You own the IP. |
| MOQ | 300 pcs per style | 500 – 1,000 pcs per style | 3,000 pcs per style |
| Tooling Cost | $0 (Zero Mold Fee) | $0 (Zero Mold Fee) | $3,000 – $8,500 (For Injection Molds) |
| Lead Time | 6 – 8 Weeks | 8 – 10 Weeks | 12 – 16 Weeks (includes 3D & mold making) |
| Best For | Startups & Salons testing the market. | Growing brands needing specific functions (e.g., softer bristles). | Enterprise brands building unique proprietary shapes. |
Factory Insight: Do not pay for OEM molds unless you absolutely have to. The most profitable path for 90% of our clients is starting with Private Label (300 pcs MOQ, $0 tooling) to test market demand. Once revenue is secured, they move to ODM for slight functional tweaks, and only scale to full OEM when they need a proprietary shape to defend market share.
A private label run goes through the same inspection as everything else we make — see how quality inspection for private label brushes works, from incoming material through to the sealed carton.
Cutting Packaging Cost Without Making It Look Cheap
This is the most common request we get after a first quotation. Packaging is usually the line item with the most flexibility — and the one where a bad decision does the most damage, because it is the first thing your customer touches.
The principle we give every client: you can simplify the structure. You cannot cut the print quality or the product protection. A box with fewer panels and one ink colour still reads as considered. A box with muddy printing, or a brush that arrives scratched, reads as a cheap product — and no amount of design work recovers that impression once the buyer has opened the carton.
| Cost driver | The cut that backfires | What we suggest instead | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printed retail box | Switch to a plain white box with a printed sticker | Keep the printed box, but move to single-colour printing with spot UV on the logo | Fewer spot colours is where the real saving sits. A sticker on white board is the fastest way to make a premium retail brush look like a budget one. |
| Gift box insert | Remove the insert and pack the brush loose in the carton | Lid-and-base box with a die-cut EVA or foam insert, instead of a complex vacuum-formed blister | The insert is what stops the brush moving in transit. Simplifying its construction saves money; deleting it means scratched handles and returns. |
| Poly bag | Drop to a very thin OPP film | Keep the film gauge as specified | Thin film tears against bristle tips and lets handles rub together in the carton. This is one of the few places where the cheaper option costs more in claims. |
| Insert card / certificate | Remove the instruction sheet or compliance card entirely | Move from coated art paper to uncoated offset, or fold it down into a smaller card | The paper stock is negotiable. Removing the card removes a document some retail channels and marketplaces expect to find in the box. |
| Master carton | Under-spec the corrugation to save on board | Standard five-ply corrugated, with simple, clean external printing | Export cartons take handling that retail packaging never sees. Simplify the print on the outside; do not thin the wall. |
| Multi-SKU range | A separate master carton design for every SKU | One shared master carton across the range, differentiated by the inner box or a label | Carton tooling and minimum print runs are charged per design. Consolidating the outer packaging across SKUs is often the largest single saving in a multi-product launch. |
Where to start if you are over budget
Work through the list in this order. The first two usually close the gap on their own, and neither is visible to the end customer:
- Consolidate master cartons across SKUs.
- Reduce the number of spot colours on the retail box; add spot UV if you need a premium cue back.
- Simplify the insert construction — foam or EVA rather than vacuum-formed blister.
- Change the paper stock on printed inserts, not the presence of them.
- Right-size the retail box to the product; an oversized box costs twice, once in board and again in shipping volume.
What we will tell you not to do: thin the poly bag, delete the insert, or replace print with stickers. Those three come back as complaints rather than savings. If your target cost cannot be reached without them, the honest answer is usually that the packaging format itself is wrong for your price point — and we would rather redesign it with you than ship something that undersells the brush inside.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common private label queries.
What is the MOQ for private label hair brushes? +
Our MOQ is 300 pieces per style for private label orders using stock molds (which includes your custom logo and Pantone color). If you need ODM modifications, the MOQ is 500-1,000. Full OEM custom molds require a 3,000 piece MOQ.
How long does it take from design brief to delivery? +
The standard timeline is 6-8 weeks. Week 1 is for consultation and digital mockups, Week 2-3 for physical pre-production samples, Week 4-6 for mass production, and Week 7-8 for final QC and shipping arrangements.
Do I own the design if I use your existing molds? +
The base mold remains Mackay’s property, but your specific branding layout (logo, custom color combinations, and packaging) is exclusively yours and protected under a strict Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). If you pay the tooling fee for a full custom OEM mold, you own 100% of the IP for that mold.
Can I start with private label and upgrade to OEM later? +
Yes, this is our most recommended path. Start with Private Label (300 MOQ) to generate cash flow, then progress to ODM modifications, and finally invest in full OEM molds as your brand matures. Because we handle all three models in-house, you never have to switch factories as you scale.
Can you help reduce my packaging cost? +
Yes, and we will tell you which cuts are safe and which are not. The savings that work are structural: consolidating master cartons across SKUs, reducing spot colours, simplifying the insert construction, right-sizing the box. The cuts we advise against are thinning the poly bag, deleting the insert, and replacing print with stickers, because those show up as damage claims and returns rather than savings. Send us your target cost and we will come back with a packaging specification that gets there.
